First-hour campaign walkthrough: DAAMAT invasion, ship base, Red Hands hunt

  • East Africa setting: DAAMAT combatants are finishing off remaining government forces in a city. DAAMAT is seizing power across East African countries with violence and executions.
  • The stolen cargo ship becomes your mobile base. It is cramped, with bays that need rebuilding — the barracks is the priority, and staff quarters can be finished over time.
  • Recruitment is limited to fresh recruits at first; veterans can be added to the database later. The base can accommodate up to six recruits maximum.
  • Julia handles navigation and ops and receives intel/coordinates. General/President Canindo — the resistance leader — provides missions and intel. Recruits should be equipped with body armor and grenades before deployment.
  • The Red Hands faction is a key enemy: eliminate their leader, and capture their field commanders alive to reveal intel about him. The United People's Front is a newly formed resistance alliance running guerrilla operations.
  • Intel is a valuable resource used to secure contracts for new equipment and base improvements. You can run ops tasks while construction is underway.

WarHounds gameplay - Steam Playtest - A mix of XCOM and Jagged Alliance

Playtest impressions: overwatch, AP economy, hit chances, ship-hijacking mission

  • Turn-based AP system: the "Go, go, go" command gives an ally 1 AP. Aiming improves the next shot in the current turn. Close combat exists but is not a guaranteed kill.
  • Overwatch is central: set a marked surveillance area and the unit automatically attacks once per turn when an enemy moves inside it. Use it to cover windows and building exits. Two overwatch shots can still fail to stop a moving enemy.
  • Cover matters a lot — full cover is acknowledged. Ammo is limited; running out of ammo creates pressure to end a battle quickly. Soldiers can be hit and lose armor, and can change position during combat.
  • Healing sprays are consumable healing items. Aimed/limb shots exist, including knee shots. Mission areas are cleared sector by sector ("Sector clear").
  • The ship-hijacking objective requires a specific character/role — not every soldier can do it.
  • The playtest shows a 30% hit chance example followed by a flank one-hit kill — positioning and angles decide fights.

Is Warhounds worth playing on PC? - Let's Try (blind run)

Opening "Distant Smoke" mission: escort President Canindo to safety

  • A blind first-run impression. The opening mission, Distant Smoke, is an escort: get President Canindo to safety while fighting through DAAMAT forces.
  • Intro: an East African city is burning; Demat (DAAMAT) battalions are finishing off government forces. Zarmal attacks the palace during the intro and the president's guards do not answer.
  • The president reportedly hired the Warhounds to fight off the combatants — drive the enemy out of cities, then eliminate their commanders one by one.
  • The player acts as Commander and takes charge personally. Julia Taylor is the communications officer and consultant for Africa. A soldier named "Fidget" is controllable.
  • A sniper-like unit can one-hit kill; a medic class is present in the squad.
  • Enemy military drones exist — one observed had the number "nine", implying at least eight more.

Long-form early-access analysis: AP tactics, vision/LOS, contract progression, base

  • Developed by Everplay DMCC, published by Brightika, Inc. Mercenary squad premise with old-school action movie vibes — "very XCOM-esque."
  • Turn-based tactics with "proper ballistics and tactics." The AP system governs actions; vision/line-of-sight display shows colored areas as visible and gray areas as unseen.
  • The Demat (DAAMAT) regime is described as an onslaught. The regional resistance has fallen; only one country is still holding out.
  • President Canindo hired the Warhounds. On arrival, he has been overthrown and his guards do not answer — a tutorial mission follows after landing.
  • Missions are estimated at 30–40 minutes. Progression is contract-based from a base of operations.
  • Settings include difficulty options, blood options, camera options, movement speed, subtitles and music. In the playtest, difficulty is fixed mid-mission rather than selectable.
  • Positive impressions: interesting concept, old-school action-movie vibe, XCOM-like feel. Host curious to see how characters work together.
Method: Each video's transcript was captured and summarized section by section to surface facts — named characters, factions, mission names, mechanics and tips — that don't appear on the store page.
